Chapter 1: Ideological Basis of Pakistan (1857-1940)

SLO Content

The Two Nation Theory developed gradually due to the social, economic and political conditions faced by Muslims of the subcontinent after the War of Independence 1857. After 1857, Muslims experienced political decline, loss of government positions and economic difficulties. They also faced educational backwardness because many Muslims had limited access to modern education. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan played an important role in Muslim awakening by promoting modern education and social reforms through the Aligarh Movement. His efforts helped Muslims develop awareness about their separate identity. Politically, Muslims became concerned about their representation in a Hindu-majority democratic system. The formation of the All India Muslim League in 1906 strengthened Muslim political awareness. The idea continued to develop through Allama Iqbal's vision of a separate Muslim state in 1930 and Quaid-e-Azam's leadership of the Pakistan Movement. The Lahore Resolution of 1940 provided political direction, and finally Pakistan was created in 1947 based on the Two Nation Theory.
